First Group of Pilot Apprentices Qualifying

Some of GMG’s apprentices and also some representatives from Skills Development Scotland, CITB and South Lanarkshire Council

Working closely with the education sector, GMG feed into college curriculum to help ensure that young people gain the knowledge they need to be successful in the construction industry. They work with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) to develop SVQ modules and National Occupational Standard. An example being, piloting a Modern Apprenticeship SVQ Level 2 in conjunction with South Lanarkshire  College. GMG is active in developing relevant and trade specific training and accreditation (such as in roof tiling and external render) this aligns with the operational requirements of the business- thus, they have promoted seasonal/demand-aligned college attendance and greater emphasis on on-site assessment. This has been a hugely successful apprenticeship programme which they invest time and resources in developing new models of apprenticeship training. Their fantastic retention rate of apprentices speaks for itself – 96% of GMG apprentices have become tradespeople and 85% of those who leave return to work with them.

Our first group of apprentices have recently qualified, have been awarded their SVQ’s and are now fully qualified roof tilers.  This pilot was the first of it’s kind and was proven to be a great success.  This new route of apprenticeship was so successful we repeated the programme with a further 16 apprentices following in the pilot groups footsteps, and are working to get a further 16 together to repeat the process once again.
