Listed Building to get refurbishment in conservation area

Published: 12 August 2022

East Ayrshire Council have awarded GMG the contract to upgrade the historic, grade B listed property on Glaisnock Street in Cumnock.

The intricacies of the restoration project will require expert levels of attention and care. Works that will be carried out on the property include:

  • Slating
  • Specialist window overhaul including sash and case window replacement
  • Extensive lead work
  • Flat roof renewal
  • Rainwater goods renewal
  • Stone indents – Lime pointing / Render
  • Internal and External decoration
  • Preservation works

John Gallagher, who has worked with GMG Contractors Ltd for more than 20 years, has extensive experience in refurbishment and heritage projects, making him the obvious choice to lead the project.

John said: “The job requires traditional methods of construction and will be a tremendous opportunity for some of our local apprentices to experience traditional methods of building which were used when this magnificent architectural gem was built. Refurbishing this heritage building with so many different aspects will showcase GMG’s strengths in varying skills and demonstrate the diversity and attention to detail which our company embodies.”

Starting in August, the £200k project will be carried out by GMG Contractors’ in-house craftsmen, with works due to be completed in November 2022.

GMG is well-placed to carry out the project, having managed slating and flat roof work on other heritage sites, such as the Argyll Community Housing Association (ACHA) project in Helensburgh.

John added: “This will be a very rewarding contract to manage, as the detail and effort involved with slating and flat roofing always pays off. Plus, it’s great getting to witness a historic building being brought back to its former glory for all to enjoy.”
