More than 50 apprentices have trained with GMG over the last decade and we want to celebrate these individuals this National Apprenticeship Week (5-11 February 2024).
The theme for this year’s celebration, backed by the UK Government, is ‘Skills for Life’.
Given our commitment to recruiting, investing and training apprentices to provide them with lifelong careers, this theme fits perfectly with GMG’s ethos.
We see every apprentice as an individual with a unique set of skills and enormous potential. It is our duty as a responsible employer to empower these individuals to forge their career path through the construction industry.
We aim to be a modern and progressive employer, ensuring we support our apprentices at every stage of their career and provide them with essential skills and experience in everything from joinery and roofing, to roughcasting and external wall insulation (EWI) installation.
We provide a comfortable and relaxed learning environment and our employment policy targets disadvantaged local communities. In fact, 90% of our apprentices are recruited from areas of high deprivation.
Many apprentices hold no formal qualifications prior to starting work at GMG. Therefore we take care to offer learning support and have built an excellent partnership with South Lanarkshire College. The college’s wide range of courses mean each apprentice has the opportunity to build on their education to the benefit of their career.
We take a proactive role when it comes to learning on the job. We value site-based assessment and have long helped to develop relevant and trade-specific training and accreditation. This also benefits the operational requirements of the business, meaning we can promote seasonal or demand-aligned college attendance.
It is not just about trade skills. Our modern apprenticeship routes also offer young people opportunities to progress careers in administration, accountancy, quantity and building surveying. For this we work closely with Glasgow Caledonian University.
We have been operating for more than 35 years and are very proud of our homegrown talent. More than 90% of GMG managers were once GMG apprentices, so we know that an apprenticeship with GMG is the first step of a progressive career path.
Almost all of our apprentices progress to tradespeople roles – this commitment to workers led to the company being awarded ‘Investors in Young People’ status in 2014 and ultimately to achieving Investors in Young People Platinum accreditation in 2022.
GMG is helping to build the future of the Scottish construction industry one apprentice at a time by constructing individual focused learning routes.
Building personalised futures for the next generation is ingrained in our DNA and we will continue to forge each apprentice an individual and unique path for many years to come.
