Praising the roof in school upgrade

Published: 8 November 2021

GMG are proud to have delivered a major upgrade to a school for children with complex support needs.

The project – which involved replacement roof coverings and associated repairs – required careful planning because the works were carried out while the school remained fully operational.

However, GMG drew on their experience of successfully delivering works in live public environments with challenging conditions – and the staff and children at Southcraig School in Ayr are delighted with the outcome.

The project – which ran for three months – affected affected the perimeter roof, east roof and a courtyard area of the school and involved:

  • Full re-tile to pitched roof
  • New Firestone Rubberseal covering to flat roof
  • Leadwork and rainwater pipe replacements
  • UPVC cladding

The programme of works – for South Ayrshire Council – allowed GMG to give their apprentices valuable exposure to commercial works and to flat-roofing skills.

Site Manager John Gallagher said: “This was a challenging contract, due to the tight time scales and having to work within school holidays and school breaks.

“However, the staff and the children were made up with the outcome of our work and love their new school, which made this project unbelievably rewarding.”

GMG have extensive experience of working within the educational sector and have carried out upgrade and refurbishment programmes at Kilwinning Academy and St Bridget’s in Kilbirnie – both in Ayrshire.
